A note on the sad state of this site

I must apologize for the state of this page, which is 16 months overdue for an update. I have a pile of requests for links that I have not yet added. I have, however, zapped the outdated links as of today.

Discussion

New World Media Nice CGI-based web bulletin board. Site is largely oriented around views of Noam Chomsky but it also aspires to create "digital infrastructure" for progressive discussion and rich data-base of links.
Spoons' Marxism Space (These seem to be some of the more popular listservs on Marxism. They will soon all be readable via the web. There is some good discussion here as well as enormous amounts of crap. They have recently been reorganized into eight different marxist-related ListServs: Intro, General, News, International, Feminism, Psych and Thaxis (the word "thaxis" comes from a combination of "theory" and "praxis". "Praxis", in turn, is Latin or something for "practice"). They also have an archive of papers on marxist topics.
ASAN's (Against Sleep and Nightmare) Anti-Capital Web (This is the web-based BBS portion of the ASAN site. The site is run by a person describing himself as a Marxist but "definitely not" a Leninist. If you want to have your comments posted to the web but don't want to wait for my (usually tardy) Tuesday evening and Saturday morning updates here, the ASAN uses CGI programming that will post your comments in less than a minute. Many of the people who post here are anarchists and flakey types but for some reason I feel right at home ;-)

Netizen Activist Resource Center (NARC) Progressive Clearinghouse's Progressive List (They have the ambition of being one of the better lists.)
Institute for Global Communications (Lots of progressive and interesting stuff here. Plus, as a bonus, readers can watch how social-democracy kisses the ass of the Democratic Party. Send your tax-deductible checks to this 501(c)(3) organization. A large site, they break down into 5 main sublinks: PeaceNet, EcoNet, ConflictNet, LaborNet, and Women'sNet. They also offer relatively inexpensive connection to the web.) In a similar vein is WebActive ("What's new in activism online")
cy.Rev "Journal of Cybernetic Revolution, Sustainable Socialism and Radical Democracy", ie: more or less leftist views (whatever that means) on cyber issues, hosted on the server of the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation--a lobbying group representing a merger of the concerns of civil libertarians and the gigabuck computer industry).

If you can web browse you can have free anonymous e-mail. (Note: If security is very important to you--you can browse from a cyber-cafe or library where no real names are required.) This site asks you to register but does not require a mailing address. (ie: security conscious activists will note that there is no mechanism to force you to use your real name or city/country of residence.)

Communist Party of Iran (Home page of the CPI and its Kurdistan organization, Komala. [Note by Ben 6.Oct.96] This site was recommended by a viewer. I was familiar with this organization in the past but had lost touch with it. It has a stirring history of armed struggle against both the reactionary government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the bourgeois nationalist trends in Kurdistan that have attempted to suppress it.)
Worker-Communist Party of Iran My friend João from Portugal writes:
"On your links page, I see you have the Communist Party of Iran. But the Iranians you should look into are the ones of the Worker-Communist Party of Iran. There is some fine stuff there from Mansoor Hekmat. When you have some time, you should read 'Our Differences' and 'Marxism and the World Today'. That should interest you. Do you know this guy? I've heard he had relations with the M-L Party" [ie: the MLP,USA]
As far as I understand, this organization and the one above were both part of the same group at the time that my organization (the former Marxist-Leninist Party, USA) dissolved in November 1993. I am very sketchy on the details and, unfortunately, am too pressed for time right now to look into this matter, which is very important. Fortunately, readers do not need to rely on my judgement but instead can simply check out both groups and see what they say about themselves (and possibly each other) in their own words. The Content of Socialism / Communism Other than my own work, this is the only discussion on the web (of which I am aware) on what the period of transition to communism might be like. A letter gives my opinion on some of the strengths and weaknesses of these views. Please note: readers who are aware of other web sites on this topic--please let me know--and we can link to them here.
The Digital Fire is a (relatively) short and easy-to-read essay on both:
(a) how the communications revolution will affect the left, and
(b) such questions as whether the dictatorship of the proletariat will censor the internet.
informal communist discussion (There is almost nothing here right now. There will be a lot eventually.) Site will (hopefully!) eventually be focused on being:
(1) a discussion area on how to build a communist movement worthy of the name, and
(2) an easy jumping off place to find out public information about the activity and positions of all organizations which consider themselves to be communist. By the author of this site.
A cyberLeninist Perspective on Information War Right now this is mostly just links to both bourgeois and activist sites dealing with aspects of "information war" as a struggle for ideas and ideology. Eventually this page will develop.

DHKP-C (Revolutionary Peoples Liberation Party-Front) (Turkey and Turkish Kurdistan)
Unfortunately, I am ignorant about what is going on in Turkey and Kurdistan. I do know, however, that the Turkish government is extremely repressive. Journalists are routinely sentenced to long prison terms for reporting the truth. Political activists are assassinated by death squads operating under government guidance and protection. The repression in the Kurdish sections of Turkey (about 20% of the population) is particularly intense and the Turkish government has carried out numerous massacres in villages where Kurdish insurgents enjoy popular support. I know very little about the left in Turkey but it does seems clear that this is one of the most significant organizations. Although the DHKP-C is an "illegal leftist organization" in Turkey, it's views are reflected by a legally registered newsweekly, Kurtulus (Liberation), whose representative in Adana, Mehmet Topaloglu, was gunned down in his apartment by Turkish police on January 28, 1998. The DHKP-C has organized large armed demonstrations against the Turkish government and has also, on occasion, punished individuals responsible for atrocities. Hundreds of supporters of this organization in Germany and France have faced arbitrary arrest and brutal harassment. This site, with translations in English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Turkish and Arabesk, is definitely worth checking out.

Revolutionary Worker Online (Recommended by--surprise--the RCP)
See their comments in the forum. I will do a short review of this site when I find the time.
• Links about the "Communist Party of Peru" (PCP). (Usually called "Sendero Luminoso" or "Shining Path" in the popular and bourgeois press. I thought I should include some links since I mention this organization in a short section on government snooping on web-browsing.) I do not consider this organization to be communist and am not sure what to make of it. It is engaged in an armed struggle against a most brutal and repressive regime in Peru, seems to have a fair amount of popular support (it would not be able to carry out such a prolonged struggle in such difficult conditions without a fair measure of popular support) and has been the subject of a lot of discussion. What should be the position of the working class toward this organization and the struggle it leads? I suggest as follows: We support the resistence to the repressive regime in Peru, and the armed struggle being waged (because it is a just cause) but we do not necessarily endorse either the errors (which may be very severe) or the guiding ideology of this organization. The PCP itself has no official web site, but I include here some sites that both support and oppose it. The supporters of this organization appear to have very strong disagreements with one another.

• Opposing the Communist Party of Peru (Sendero Luminoso):
Reports of human rights abuses by the PCP. Most likely this is material taken out of context such that the killing of police agents of the fascist regime and the killing of innocent peasants are placed side-by-side in a fabric composed of both fact and fiction. What proportions fact and fiction ? From this distance (not in kilometers but in time to examine and sort out facts) -- I don't know.
Anti-Sendero "War Diary" Essay by American student/photographer who visted Peru under the auspices of various bourgeois/liberal foundations and compares the PCP to the Khmer Rouge.

Communist Voice Home page for the Communist Voice Organization. This is a militant reformist group with strong pretensions of theoretical clarity as a center for "anti-revisionist communism". And some of their material is quite good. They give what are often excellent analyses of the line and tactics of various misleaders of working class and progressive struggles. Unfortunately a strong sectarian spirit penetrates much of their theoretical work. My polemic, The Self-Organizing Moneyless Economy, against the leader of this group, Joseph Green, and his neo-Stalinist "single-point-of-control" conception of the nature of future communist society may be, to date, the only existing sketch of how society will actually function without money, capital, commodities, wages or the rule of either the market or all-powerful central planners. (see also "ML Books" below)
Marxist-Leninist Books Home page for the Chicago Workers' Voice group. No one has recommended it but I include it here because of historic ties. Both this group, the one above and cyberLeninism emerged from the debris of the Marxist-Leninist Party. This organization is referenced in some of the documents that are part of the Self-Organizing Moneyless Economy.
